Ine, sitting on the couch, holding his forehead and looking anxious. His mom sits next to him with a hand on his shoulder and his dad, a pale green lizard with red feathers on his head and tail, stands nearby, holding a newspaper in one hand. Ine says, "Feathers! I'm such an idiot! I waited too long and now there are no apartments left." Mom says, "Keep checking, Hon. Something may open up." Ine looks up as Dad hands him the newspaper and says, "Check tht classifieds too. They may have rooms not listed in the directory." Ine opens the newspaper, sighs, and says, "I guess if I don't find any I can beg Uncle Lane to take me back." Mom stifles a laugh and Dad chuckles as he says, "Yeah, and if he doesn't, I've got a sturdy cardboard box you can borrow!" Ine looks up, annoyed, and says, "Oh, shut it!"

Lark says…

Lark

He'll even throw in the scratchy wool blanket at the back of the hall closet, just to sweeten the deal!

Behind the Scenes

That last line by Ine’s dad is totally something my own dad would have said! In fact, I think he might have said it at some point to gently cajole me into initiating my own housing search.

Looking at the completed page now, I really think I was being too clever by half with the colors and patterns in the background, filling in the spaces between panels. I was trying to evoke the feeling of frustration, stress, and worry, but I think it just comes across as busy and kinda weird. But it’s another thing I learned and refined as I went along.
