Ine slowly walks into the kitchen past his open laptop on the table, slouching and looking disappointed. He groans and says, "I guess I'll have to explain to Uncle Lane that I was too stupid to find an apartment before the new semester." He stops as he passes the laptop, glancing back at it in surprise as he says, "What the--?" His eyes widen as he takes out his cell phone and leans forward to read the laptop screen aloud. "Apple Orchard Apartments, single male housing, one room, must go fast! Call Rick..." Ine looks frantic as he talks on his phone saying, "Hi, is this Rick? You're selling your contract?" A voice from the phone responds, "Yeah, are you available to look at it tonight?" Ine suddenly disappears, leaving behind a cloud of white smoke. A voice calls from off panel, "Dinner's ready Ine." Ine's voice calls back from the opposite side, "Save some for me! I'll be right back!"
Lark says…
Nothing quite like that heart-clenching feeling that you’ve got no place to live for the coming school year. At least Ine is fortunate enough to have supportive family nearby he can fall back on if needed. Not everybody has that kind of plan B. (Of course, he’s the more fortunate that he ended up not needing that option.)
You can see I experimented with a couple versions of panel 2. While the version with just his tail sticking out would have been easier to draw (cartoonists are lazy, lol!), the second does a better version of communicating what he’s thinking, because it’s clear that he’s responding to something he saw on the computer screen, rather than something in the next room.
