Getting Stronger 6

Transcript

We see a closeup of the back of Michelle's head as Lia runs a hand through her hair, saying, "There, brushing's all done. You big baby!" Michelle replies, "Hrmph... is there anything left?" Lia sticks out her tongue and says, "If you brush it daily, it won't get so tangled." Michelle says, "Whatever. Let's see what you can do. Just don't cut anything." Lia turns to fetch something and says, "Sure. What's your favorite color?" Looking panicked, Michelle hastily says, "No dying anything either!" Lia says, "No, of course not. Just pick out a ribbon," and holds up a small felt board lined with hair clips, each with a different colored ribbon attached. Michelle glances at them and says, "Oh... uh, green I guess." With a smile, Lia removes the clip with the green ribbon and says, "Honestly, anyone would think I was torturing you." Michelle smirks back at her and says, "I might prefer torture."

Lark says…

Lark

Hello. My name is Michelle Andrews. You brushed my hair. Prepare to dye.

Behind the Scenes

Why does English have to be so weird? Why do there have to be two words that sound exactly the same, yet have completely unrelated meanings? Why does one of those have to be a rather dark and scary meaning, while the other–the one I wanted to use–is completely benign? And why oh why doe the progressive tense of the incorrect word look like the way one might reasonably try to spell the progressive tense of the correct one?

I am of course talking about the words “die” verses “dye”. Or more specifically, “dying” and “dyeing”. Look at that! How is d-y-e-i-n-g the correct spelling?! I think d-y-i-n-g makes more sense. If anything, the progressive form of “die” should be d-i-e-i-n-g, right? That makes just as much sense!

As you can see in the drafts, I chose the wrong word at first. Fortunately, I noticed. Unfortunately, it was only after I had exported all the files. So I had to redo that step.

I do this for you. You’re welcome. 😅😭
