We see a table full of plates of cookies, all wrapped in plastic with red and green bows. June's hands are nearby writing out Kululea's name on a piece of paper as she hums and sings, "Hmmm… hmm hmmm, so tender and mild… Sleep in heavenly--" She's interrupted by a knock at her door. She looks back in surprise and says, "Peace…? Is that Chris already?" She smiles as she approaches her apartment door and thinks, "I'm glad I finished wrapping these yest--" She opens the door and stares in shock at Ine, who is wearing only a pair of swim trunks and a towel. It's dark and snowy outside and he's shivering. June says, "What the--??" and Ine stares back wide eyed and stammers, "Uh, H-hi. I c-can explain…"
Lark says…
Poor cold Ine! 😂
As you can see, I originally had the first panel devoid of any dialog and just showed June’s hands writing. Then I remembered an important rule of comicking: always give each panel more than one job. So while the original panel served its purpose as an establishing shot, I added June singing softly to herself to remind readers that it’s getting close to Christmastime, as well as to share a bit of June’s character. It also makes for a slightly more interesting first panel. A pair of hands writing something may or may not seem that interesting to a new reader, but including the song lyrics tells more of a story.
Also I must say that CLIP Studio’s new ability to skew and rotate text is a godsend! It really makes things more dynamic when you can put a little slant on a character’s exclamation or on an important sound effect!
