Breaking the Fast 12

Transcript

Ine turns to get up from his seat at the table, smiles, waves, and says, "Hey, you're here!" June waves back tentatively, blushes, and says, "Y-yeah, hi!" Glancing down bashfully, she says, "I was just wondering if you coul--" She's suddenly interrupted by Candi the crocodile, who's now standing nearby and waving as she says, "Hey Ine!" June looks startled and turns to watch as Candi approaches Ine and the two begin to chat. Candi says, "Sorry I'm late. I got my directions mixed up!" Ine laughs and says, "I told you, the mountains are East!" The two blur in the foreground as Candi says, "Very funny! So what's there to eat? I'm hungry!" Ine responds, "I made some soup if you want to try it!" Meanwhile, June turns and walks away, glancing backwards sadly as she does.

Behind the Scenes

Poor June, feeling left out and rejected once again. 😟 I blurred Ine and Candi in the final panel to help bring more focus to June, and her feeling of being alone in a crowd. It might be a little too subtle, but I also didn’t want the blur effect to be distracting. If I were to go back and do it again, I might lighten and desaturate their colors a bit, and maybe even add a light shadow around June’s whole figure in order to draw the viewer’s eye more to her. Perhaps that’s an effect to experiment with more in the future.

Oh, and one more slight detail on this page: Candi’s line in the last panel changed slightly from the original. She was going to say, “I’m starving!” instead of “I’m hungry!” but I realized at the last minute that that’s what Luchette said back on page 4. Not that it would be unusual for two people to say the same thing at the same social event, especially when they’ve been waiting to eat since morning. But it’s similar enough to be distracting. Our minds naturally latch on to anything that seems to be a pattern, so it’s prudent to remove them where that extra attention isn’t actually helpful.
