The caption reads, "Chimera's Wrath is played on a board of hexagonal tiles that can be rearranged into many configurations." We see a hexoganal board divided into regions of different colors. The caption continues, "Special tiles allow players to draw cards, which represent useful items, as well as vials of DNA allowing them to transform." We see one hexagonal tile marked with a box, and arrows pointing from the box to various items, including a medical kit, a package labeled "M.R.E.", a flare gun, and several vials of colored liquid. A closeup of one of the vials reveals a strand of DNA within it. Next, the caption says, "While optional, some players use miniatures with interchangeable limbs to represent their characters." We see a canine figurine whose arm has been removed, and is being replaced with a piece containing four spider legs. The final caption reads, "When two characters meet, they can trade items, do battle, or sometimes even transform each other." We see Chris, holding his normal arms up as two rows of spider legs sprout beneath them. He is glaring upward and shouting, "NOOOOOO!! I don't wanna be a spider-dog!!" while Dil (still wearing his tortoise shell) grins and chuckles from nearby.
Lark says…
You’ll notice Chris’ expression in the rough draft version of this page looks kinda terrified, while the in the final version he just looks kind of annoyed or exasperated. While drawing this one, I wanted to keep the idea of Dil transforming Chris into something he didn’t want. Chris’ shocked expression though looked to me a bit too much like it came from a horror story, especially considering the actual spider legs that were bursting out of his body, evoking scenes from Alien or The Thing.
So while I kept the scene of Chris sprouting spider legs, I opted to change his expression to look less like he was thinking, “Oh no, what’s happening to me?!” and more like he was thinking, “Oh great, not again…” The only things I changed were his eyes. Instead of wide open and staring down at himself, they’re now rolled back with eyebrows down. And it worked! That small change cues the audience that the situation is humorous, not horrifying. Which is a good thing; Dil may be tricky, but he’s not cruel!
