Notwithstanding the heavy nature of the topic of this page, I really enjoyed the opportunity to play with the text and word balloons. In prose, you can communicate that one character is interrupting another. However, comics give you an extra visual tool. Luchette’s word balloon cuts into her ex’s, visually obscuring whatever he was trying to say. Using different fonts is also useful for communicating different feelings and intensities. I even used a slightly different font for Lu’s ex. Not enough to be distracting, but enough to make it clear that something’s not quite right when she first answers her phone on the previous page. Whoever’s on the other end isn’t a part of Lu’s circle; the slight difference in font helps to communicate that, which is important in this case since we can’t see his face and need to know as quickly as possible that whoever it is isn’t who she thought it was.
